How to Soothe Vaginal Itching

Vaginal itching rarely indicates a serious problem, but it\’s irritating nonetheless. Luckily, it\’s easy to find and eliminate the cause of an itchy vagina before it gets in the way of your life.

Chemical irritants

The dyes and fragrances used in many products can be irritating to the sensitive skin of the vagina. In fact, most vaginal itching is caused by irritants like this. Think about the types of products that come into contact with your vagina. Tampons and other feminine hygiene products, toilet paper, cleansing wipes, and soaps are all possible culprits. Even items like laundry detergent, which doesn\’t come into direct contact with your body, can leave irritating residue behind.

Fixing this problem is as easy as changing your shopping list a little bit. When purchasing any kind of feminine hygiene product or toilet paper, skip the ones that are scented or are any color other than white. Plain products work just as well and are much less likely to cause vaginal itching. Similarly, wipes and soaps to be used in the vaginal area should be gentle, without additives. As for detergent, the variety made for baby clothes is less irritating than others, so this may be a good purchase if you\’re experiencing problems with vaginal itching.

Infections

The other most common cause of an itching vagina is infection. There are two main kinds of infections that cause itching. The first is a yeast infection. The main symptom of a yeast infection is a white discharge that slightly resembles cottage cheese. You can contract a yeast infection in a few different ways: antibiotics, birth control pills, pregnancy, menopause, and sexual intercourse are all possible causes. Vaginal itching should go away as soon as the infection itself is treated.

The other kind of infection that can cause itching is vaginitis. Symptoms of vaginitis include inflammation, discharge, soreness, and redness. Vaginitis has more potential causes than yeast infections. Essentially, anything that irritates the vagina beyond what it normally would be can cause vaginitis. As with yeast infections, treating the infection should also treat vaginal itching associated with it.

Prevention

Prevention is the best cure when it comes to any condition. Vaginal itching is no exception. The easiest way to prevent this problem from returning is to keep up whatever you did to stop the itching in the first place. If buying gentler products solved the problem, continue using them. If the itching was the result of an infection, avoid things that could cause the infection to come back.
